The number one fear in the world is not death, it is public speaking. In the words of Jerry Seinfeld most people ?would rather be in the casket, than delivering the eulogy.? However, the world in which we live requires individuals to stand before audiences and deliver messages, even though the prospect can be intimidating. In fact, companies and corporations continue to report that the top criteria in determining job success and attainment among students are communications skills ? speaking and writing.
Bryant University?s premiere public speaking organization, The Podium, has been helping over a hundred students each year overcome? their fear of public speaking.
The Podium is a club open to all students on campus. Honored in 2011 as ?The Most Improved Organization of the Year? by the Center for Student Involvement, The Podium, along with the Department of Communication, and the College of Arts & Sciences is now promoting one of the top public speaking events in the northeast, The 3rd Annual Public Speaking Colloquium.
Fox Providence called the Public Speaking Colloquium the ?American Idol of public speaking.?? The event gives students an opportunity to showcase their oratorical skills while also receiving constructive criticism from seasoned judges as they prepare to enter the job market.
Applications can be obtained by contacting Professor Susan Baran at subaran@bryant.edu.? The deadline for entries is March 3, 2012. There will be a preliminary elimination round on Friday, March 23rd in the TV studio where all 50 applicants will present a 3-minute speech in front of a panel of four judges. The six best speakers will move on to main event on Monday, March 26th.
Whether you enter or simply attend, all students are encouraged to participate and expose themselves to importance of public presentation.
During the main event, the finalists will deliver 5-6 minute speeches on topics of their choice, competing for over $2,000 in prize money. The first place winner will walk away with a $1,000 check, 2nd place will receive $500 and third place will take home $300. Also, an iPad 2 two will be raffled off to one lucky member of the audience. Entries will be accepted at the door and those who enter must be present to win.
Hanover Insurance Group, the event?s main sponsor, has generously donated funds to make it the most successful Colloquium yet. With a strong applicant pool, contestants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to secure their spot in this year?s competition. The Colloquium will be hosted by WPRI news anchor, Danielle North.
Once again, the 3rd Annual Public Speaking Colloquium will be held on March 26, 2012 from 7:00-9:00PM in Bello Grand Hall.? To become a contestant please e-mail Professor Susan Baran at subaran@bryant.edu or Todd Stewart at tstewar2@bryant.edu.
